Information Overload! - But It Was Helpful.

Having just published my website in the past week and spent endless hours tinkering with it to make it "look pretty", I eventually decided to revert to a basic, plain text website after reading some interesting articles. How I wish I had read the BEFORE putting my website together.

Because my site is purely article-based, it is the information that is of importance. How it looks is secondary. I made the mistake of mucking about with colours, fonts, borders, frames etc. I then realised this was all a waste of time and simply cleared the website of eveything but text.

This followed my reading several articles on a website called selfpromotion.com. It included the kind of information I needed, helping me to understand that words are everything when building a website that will be popular with search engines.

The result is that my website looks plain and basic, but that doesn't worry me in the slightest as I believe visitors to the site will be more interested in the relevant content than in the aesthetics. I now enjoy a feeling of relief that I can stop wasting time wondering if I should spruce up the website to give it a "professional look" and just get on with posting my articles for the benefit of the readers.

Having spent the last week reading, reading and reading some more, I feel as though my head is about to burst. It was valuable though as it helped direct my mind on to what is really important for my particular website and that is good old plain article content.

The Trials of Building Your Own Website

Getting a new website off the ground can be a headache! I've spent the last week putting together the pages and links for my own website and found myself having to backtrack constantly to care for minor details. There comes a point where you just have to let it go and stop tinkering.

Thankfully, my website is a content based one which means I don't have to worry about setting up products and sales elements for people to buy goods. Even so, it is amazing just how much time can be wasted sorting out details related to any website.

I've now reached the point where I can't be bothered any longer thinking about what the thing looks like. It's the articles that matter and that will be my concentration from now on. I started with 39 articles on Monday and now by Friday I have a total of 45 on the site. Over the next few months, I will add numerous articles and that includes articles written by homeworkers who want to share their experiences and get a bit of free advertising for their trouble.

Well... it's back to the old keyboard!
